III. READING

(There will be two separate and longer texts in your actual exam.)

Ever since humans have inhabited the earth, they have made use of various forms of communication. Generally, this expression of thoughts and feelings has been in the form of oral speech. When there is a language barrier, communication is accomplished through sign language in which motions stand for letters, words and ideas. Tourists, the deaf, and the mute have had to resort to this form of expression. Many of these symbols of whole words are very picturesque and exact and can be used internationally; spelling, however, cannot.

Body language transmits ideas or thoughts by certain actions, either intentionally or unintentionally.  A wink can be a way of flirting or indicating that the party is only joking. A nod signifies approval, while shaking the head indicates a negative reaction.

Other forms of non-linguistic language can be found in Braille (a system of raised dots read with the fingertips), signal flags, Morse code, and smoke signals. Road maps and picture signs also guide, warn and instruct people. While verbalisation is the most common form of language, other systems and techniques also express human thoughts and feelings.     (Adapted from a website

Model Essay

Sports have always been a great way for a country's best talents to show their skills and represent their nation. It's also a time when the whole country comes together to support their favourite teams. Many people believe that sports can help keep peace between countries. This essay will explain why sports can bring and maintain global peace.

Firstly, a key feature of popular sports events is that fans from different teams often attend the matches in their cities. Some dedicated fans even travel to other parts of the country to watch their favourite teams play. These events unite the nation as everyone cheers for their national team. For example, during the Olympics, the entire country hopes their team wins because an Olympic Medal is a huge honour.

In addition, people face many challenges every day, and sports give them a break from their routine. Watching sports allows people to enjoy some excitement and take their minds off their problems. However, sometimes overly passionate fans can cause conflicts. Despite this, the overall effect of sports is positive.

In conclusion, international sports events can help promote peace and stability in the world. They bring people from different countries together. While there can be some conflicts due to strong emotions, the positive impact of sports is much greater. The sense of unity and national pride created by these events can help build a more peaceful global community. So, I believe that international sports can significantly contribute to global peace and stability.
